P1- Artist and Designer Research

  1. Mark Kessell

A) Mark kessel is an American photographer who originally became interested in daguerreotype  as a medium for expressing ideas about identity using specifically abstract looking portraits.

B) Kessel’s work is contemporary.

C) The majority of Kessel’s work is influenced by his biological and scientific interests. One series of his work includes the development of personality and the lifecycle of the human species.

D) Mark Kessell’s work is very modern and takes the form usually as a sculpture. His work originally starts of as a drawing and then is taken into the 3D form. Kessell’s work is usually presented in an installation. In my opinion, his artwork is very unique. His drawings and photographs arguably could be considered as being basic However the way he presents and breaks up his work makes the art interesting to view. This idea of splitting up the image has inspired me as I could split up my images by using mathematic symbols.

2. Gary Hill

A) Gary Hill is an American artist who is known as one of the most foundational artists in video art. He took a strong interest in computerised images and using multi media structures.

B) Hill’s artwork is contemporary. However as an artist he wanted to challenge himself in the genre of performance art.

C) Gary Hill responded to his interest of performance art by creating artwork that paid attention to how spoken sounds can be reacted to in different environments and conditions.

D) Gary Hill’s work would be considered contemporary and slightly gothic. He combines video, sound, performance and installation. The example above of the hands in the shadows is titled ‘Three ways at once, (I don’t understand language)”. The fact that Hill involves language within his work deeply inspired to me to possibly involve meaningful words within my piece of work and project them onto a subject. His artwork denotes an underlying message of combining language with visual art, he creates powerful connections between the body.

3. Mads Perch

A) Mads Perch is a London based photographer. Perch was remotely interested in projections and creating interesting patterns on the subjects he uses.

B) Perch’s style of work is contemporary and very modern.

C) The fact that Perch’s artwork is very modern also adds to the studio lights and technology involved in order to create the projections.

D) Mads Perch’s artwork is based on the idea of projecting patterns and shapes onto the subject who is usually the main focal point. This creates an almost illusion on the subject and also clearly shows the contrast between the shadows and the light in the picture. Perch’s work is contemporary and modern. I like again, the idea of projecting patterns from the light source onto the subject.

4.Alma Haser

A) Alma Haser is a London based photographer. Her work is massively inspired by her interest in genetics and how you can blur distinctions between three dimensional imagery.

B) Haser creates very contemporary style of artwork which appears very abstract.

C) Haser responded to her interest in genetics by creating the series ‘Cosmic Surgery’ which depicts portraits which have been very manipulated into futuristic paper sculptures.

D)Alma Haser’s artwork is very unique in the sense that she involves the idea of complicated origami construction over the portrait of a subject. The series involving origami construction is called ‘cosmic surgery’, I like the the unique twist on the portraits as it gives haser’s artwork individuality and character.

A) Michael De Courcy was born in Montreal and in the late 1960’s he developed his passion to create artwork.

B) Courcy characterised himself as a ” multi disciplinary artist” and community activist.

C) Courcy responded to his interest in Public art as he created many series of photographs of ordinary people doing things they would do in their everyday life. As well as creating projections which was another one of his interests.

D) Michael De Courcy used cardboard boxes to present his photographs as it created a 3D dimension to his images making them being able to free stand. Each cube of cardboard shows a different perspective of the images. Courcy uses a mix of installation and media intervention.

6. John French

A)John French was an English fashion and portraits photographer. He started creating and advertising his own work in a studio just after World War II

B/C) French wanted to break fashion that was traditionalised and he intended to mirror social movements during the time. He helped popularise the fashion statements of animal prints and the famous mini skirts.

D) Typically, French takes photographs in black and white against a clear background. Focusing clearly on Fashion reflecting high and low contrast. The examples above show clearly how projection of a simple basic pattern can create almost an entire outfit on the subject. This artist has inspired me to use projection in my work, possibly involving either mathematical signs or words from English literature being projected on a subject.
